LĀNA’I ADVENTURE

HISTORY: COOK ISLAND PINES

One of the original pines on the island of Lanai was a Ione Norfolk Island Pine, first planted at Koele in 1875 as a gift from King David Kalakaua to Walter Murray Gibson. While living on the Koele Ranch in a house set under the original pine, ranch manager George C. Munro began to notice the sound of constant water drops on the corrugated roof. It was then he realized that the fog and clouds were a result of the pine boughs creating huge amounts condensation.

In order to begin restoring the island from decades of depredation from feral sheep and goats, Munro implemented planting programs to plant these pines across the island. Pulama Lanai is continuing to carry out this program. It is estimated that the bough of Cook Island Pines planted along the Lanai Hale summit generate enough fog drip to equal almost 200 inches of rain.
